Spent a cracking morning down on Ainsdale beach where there was a get together of mainly Vintage cars. The local council were celebrating the history of Sand Racing and have been toying with the idea of re-introducing the sport.
Present were the orginal Spider Special of basil Davenport who raced the car on the sands back in 1926. There was also the BHD Special, an earlier Davenport concoction. The numbers were also boosted by a couple of Austin 7s, a Bentley, an Invicta, a Lagonda, a Salmson Special and many more.
One never knows but racing on the beach could be resurrected!

I never saw the sand racing at Ainsdale, though I did once on holiday in Jersey. What surprised me was the quality & sophistication of the machinery used. I recall an intercontinental cooper fitted with a V8 & an F2/F3 car with a twincam in the back. Seemed maybe sacriligious plastering these with sand (& this is written by someone prepared to respray his car with sheep poo a couple of times a year), but certainly can't knock them for not taking their sport seriously.
Might even encourage the 'drifters' to come back into the mainstream?

Might even encourage the 'drifters' to come back into the mainstream? From what I have seen of reports and photos of the sport on the mainland the cars were somewhat different. There were a lot of heavily modified Minis & Imps, Ford Cortinas & Anglias plus a selection of TVRs, Elans, Spitfires and the like. The Sand Racing Specials like the Jaggernaught you would have probably seen in the Channel Islands were not in evidence at Southport - leastways they were not in any photos! I must admit that living just 10 miles from Ainsdale beach in the early 70s I never did make the pilgrimage to watch!
