BOLTON AUTOSOLO 11/2/2007
Think I've turned into Captain Slow!
Just couldn't get my head around this one. The course was very tight, used several 'gates' more than once from different directions and I think it's fair to say that it was more like an Autotest than an AutoSolo. Certainly the experienced Autotesters did particularly well, those new to the sport tended to struggle. I finished in the top 50% of the average times, despite getting lost more than once, but I wasn't happy with my performance. I'll just have to treat this one as having an "off day" I guess. Like many, I was suffering from cone blindness. I don't mean that I couldn't see them, rather that there were just too many! Ah well, better luck next time John!

This thread may be headed "Winter Fun", but it's nearly summer & there's another AutoSolo coming up. On 1st July, we're back at Blackburn Services on the M65 for Accrington & District Motor Club's summer AutoSolo. This is where it all started in the North West; the event last December was great fun, albeit bitterly cold. Organiser Steve Johnson has promised to organise some warmer weather this time! It's a really great way to spend a Sunday. The facilities at the venue are superb. The test surface is brilliantly smooth, part concrete, part Tarmac, it has gradients, cambers, flat bits and Steve has even negotiated discounts on food at the services. Although the event will favour small hatchback type cars, any car is suitable as there are several classes available. It's designed to be non-damaging motorsport (I wouldn't be taking part if it wasn't!) Even the entry fee is reasonable. Oh, and your fellow competitors are a nice bunch of people too! So, go on, what are you waiting for? For regs, go to www.anwcc.org/regs-070701at.htm. See you there? (Even if you only come to watch)

Fun! Fun! Fun! Is the best way to describe my first Autosolo at Blackburn. As John says it really is a cracking bit of motor sport on the cheap with a great bunch of people. Non damaging, well almost but that's another story, in the shopping car if needs be. I'm certainly up for another one. ;D

A close run thing which would have been closer still had Speedsport not picked up a 5 second penalty in the morning session! After the lunch halt the heavens opened and during the first run two competitors had a coming together, which precipitated their retirement, after an unfortunate marshaling mistake. John, I thought you said it was non damaging!!!! So results were finalized on the morning run only. Had the afternoon session continued in the wet it might have been a different result. Out of 19 starters we took 6th & 9th places overall and in the clubsport category 1st & 2nd in class. For the full results follow the link www.anwcc.org/Can't wait for the next one.

An excellent effort, I'd say. I see what you mean about the 5 second penalty ;D I thought that the competitors marshalled the tests It's just not safe to let them out of their cars. Best left to the professionals...eh ;D

Too true, too true. The hardy souls of LMC in hail, rain or shine........................witness the last sprint ...........................the true professionals! Indeed the competitors do take a turn about marshalling but they can also become judges of fact which I think can lead to inconsistencies in results. But hey, it's a bit of fun.

Grrrr. Blinking Mini drivers.... !!!! Seriously though, great fun, shame the event was abandoned early though. I was just getting into my stride. At least no one was hurt other than in the wallet. To declare the results at the end of the previous run was absolutely the correct decision in the circumstances but, perversely, I was rather looking forward to some runs in the wet to even things out. I was actually quite chuffed to put in some better times than several of the "experts" in the Nat B classes. As for the 5 secs penalty for clipping a cone.... ah well, it proves I was trying! ;D

Take the initials of Accrington Motor Sports Club, reverse them & you get..... CSMA. Yes, Accrington MSC is a spin off from the Civil Service Motoring Association. Best person to contact is Steve Johnson sjohnson@csma-netlink.co.uk (a highly enthusiastic & competent autotester and Formula 1000 rally driver) who is largely responsible for setting up the club. Next AutoTest is 2nd September at Blackburn with Darwen M65 services. Next Autosolo is 1st December, same location. There are other A/tests & Solos in the region, see www.anwcc.org for the North West motorsport calendar. Oh, did I mention that I'm a member too? AMSC are running marshals training sessions too, same email address if anyone is interested.

For those of you who have been following this thread you may like to know that KDMC are holding another Autosolo/Autotest at Booths Hall Knutsford on the 28th October. As Speedsport says it really is a cracking bit of motor sport, non-damaging, well almost, and all you need is the wife's shopping car or a white van or a drift b**ch for a fun day out. It's all forwards, no reversing, you just have to memorise the path through the cones and to make it really easy they even number them. As Accrington MSC are an invited club if you did their events early this year then as a member it will only set you back £16 for a fun day out. ;D Follow the link for the regs. Entry closes on the 22nd October. C U there! www.knutsfordmotorclub.co.uk/Regulation_071028_Autotest_and_Autosolo.doc
